Once again I have the pleasure to introduce our Hmoodle readers to the newest Hmoodle girl. She is none other then the very beautiful Mary Vang. She is a transplant from Wisconsin who has made her way to Minnesota to chase her dream of joining the fashion industry.
It seems that fashion is something that more and more people are pursuing, but I definitely foresee Mary making her own mark. She seems to have the want, the willpower, and the ability to make things happen. Thats why I am glad we were able to have her as a Hmodle girl.
Hmoodle: I’m here with our latest Hmoodle Girl, Mary Vang. Let me be the first to congratulate you on being selected.
Mary: Thank you so much for having me! It is such a pleasure to be featured as Hmoodle girl for this April.
Hmoodle: Before we get started, why don’t you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?
Mary: Well, I am originally from a small city in the state of Wisconsin and moved here to the Twin Cities three years ago in ’09. I came here to pursue my desired career for fashion and marketing since there wasn’t many opportunities. I have learned and gained so much while being here, it’s crazy yet completely an emotion filled with bliss! I currently attend the Art Institutes of Minnesota and will graduate next June and I absolutely cannot wait for that time.
Hmoodle: How have you been enjoying the great weather we’ve been having?
Mary: I love the weather so far! I am especially enjoying the rain that we have had which is infrequent for me to say because I am not a rain lover at all, but since it’s been so long that I’ve seen and felt rain, it really has been quite nice to soak it in and enjoy the rain weather.
Hmoodle: You moved to Minnesota from Wisconsin to pursue some career goals. What are are they and how is that pursuit going?
Mary: While being here in Minnesota, like I had previously said, I have learned and abundantly gained so much here; a variety of experiences from styling, to dressing models backstage, front-of-house managing, event planning to coordinating/producing fashion shows and photoshoots.
Hmoodle: What makes you want to pursue fashion as career?
Mary: At first it was only an interest, but now, that has evolved to something that I feel genuinely passionate for. My Mom is the reason as to why I fell in interested and in love for Fashion. She was always such a crafty person and loved sewing and fixing me and my sisters Hmong dresses and shirts. The intricate details and craftsmanship that goes into it lured me into learning about fashion design and history. Growing up, I continued to learn and study the fashion industry, especially trends, magazine companies and fashion designers. My continuous desire to learn and gain knowledge has made me only more hungry for it. All the opportunities that I’ve been able to tangibly experience only reminds me of the reason why I fell in love with Fashion in the first place.
Hmoodle: Have your always had a sense of fashion or was this something you acquired as you grew up?
Mary: Uhh, I don’t know if I always had a sense of fashion — I think I’ll let my girlfriends answer that for me [laughs]. But yes, it is indeed something I acquired while growing up because obviously, fashion changes all the time. I can honestly say that I went through five different phases of fashion styles, but that’s exactly what fashion is all about. It’s about experimenting, defining your personal style, growth, and learning about yourself as an individual.
Hmoodle: Who are some of your favorite fashion trendsetters?
Mary: Oh gosh, there are so many icons who I admire. I literally have a complete list of the people written down, but top picks would be definitely be 1. Alexa Chung 2. Mary-Kate Olsen 3. Rachel Bilson and 4. Olivia Palermo.
Hmoodle: Besides fashion, what else do you enjoy?
Mary: I really enjoy reading and blogging.
Hmoodle: What would something that our readers would be surprised to find out about you?
Mary: My answer is going to sound very corny, but I have never broken a bone, ever. Although I might not seem sporty, I played basketball throughout my elementary and middle school years and I rode an Elephant, once.
Hmoodle: Are you a hopeless romantic?
Mary: I am in relationship of almost five years now so I yes, I am a hopeless romantic.
Hmoodle: Where do you see yourself in five years?
Mary: Not only do I love fashion but I have grown a love for business as well. In five years, I hope to work for a fashion PR or Advertising company or firm here in the Twin Cities then, hopefully, once I feel prepared enough. Move out to either California or New York and hopefully pursue my dream job.
Hmoodle: Well, we wish you the best of luck with that. Do you have any last words for our readers?
Mary: Yes. I know that fashion is becoming a very popular career choice for many Hmong females. If you want to pursue it, go for it, but if you want to succeed, I advise you to study and learn everything about fashion and the industry itself. Learn about your favorite trends and its history, designers who you admire, even terms and the vocabuary. Most importantly, gain first-hand experience so you know and get a feel of what the industry is like, volunteer and network, network, network! I cannot stress how important that is. You will be amazed by how many doors will open for you simply by just getting know someone.
Lastly, I would like to thank you and Jabb, owner and founder of Hmoodle, for featuring me on here. It is a pleasure and I hope that everyone who reads this will be able to take some sort of advice out of my feature.
Once again, I want to congratulate Mary on being selected. We look forward to seeing the strides you make as you pursue your goals in fashion.
