This past weekend Hmoodle headed out to Hamline University to watch the 12 team Invitational Basketball Tournament presented by Hamline’s Hmong Student Association. It was a double elimination tournament, which resulted in Dynasty taking the crown.
Dynasty has been reigning supreme in the Hmong basketball world as long as I can remember. I don’t see any weaknesses. Every player on the team is capable of hitting a jumper from anywhere on the court—even with a hand in the face. Their ability to move the ball on the small court was amazing. I knew that meant trouble for whoever was going to play them when the tournament went to the full sized court for the finals.
Dynasty faced Northsiders in the finals of the tournament. As I mentioned before, Dynasty has a team full of shooters. They started the game hitting their first seven three pointers. It looked like it was going to be a blow out, but team Northsiders didn’t give up.
In the second half, they slowly chipped away the lead Dynasty had and finally caught up with about three minutes remaining in the game. It was a very intense last three minutes, which had the crowd on the edge of their seats. Whether they were cheering on Dynasty, Northsiders, or just wanting to see who the winner would be, the crowd was really into the game.
With the game tied at 48-48, Dynasty brought the ball down the court with the clock ticking down down to under ten seconds. The Dynasty player drove into the lane and put up a shot and missed, but a questionable foul was called with four seconds remaining. The Notrthsiders crowd tried to distract the shooter, but to no avail as he made both free throw shots to take the lead, 50-48.
Northsiders then called timeout to talk things over. After the timeout, Northsiders inbounded the ball and made couple quick passes, but with only four seconds remaining they were unable to get off a good shot and Dynasty would prevail.
What a great game. Congrats to both teams and providing a worthy championship game. I really enjoyed myself and look forward to seeing these two teams meet again.
