Gaotzeng And The Dancers

To a lot of people, dancing boost self confidence and self esteem by creating an outlet for self expression and the opportunity to explore something new and exciting.

Hmoodle caught with Gaotzeng,  a dancer herself since middle school. Read her interview below and see what she’s up to.

Hmoodle: Give us a self introduction.

Gao: Hello everybody! My name is Gaotzeng. Everybody calls me Gao, for short. I am 22 years old and currently living in Charlotte, North Carolina. I am currently not going to school but I plan on attending Appalachian State University in the Fall of 2016 for my Communications Disorder degree. I am very outgoing, I love to hike, play football, play my guitar, sing, and most importantly, dance.

Hmoodle: Growing up, how did your parents feel about you dancing?

Gao: Growing up in a Hmong family, it was very hard to be placed in dance classes because my parents were always very traditional. It was not until the 7th grade when I finally joined my first dance team. I was a part of the step team in my middle school for two years. Moving on to high school, I eventually became a cheerleader. Even though I absolutely loved it, my parents still did not understand my passion for it. But I am glad to say that to this day, they are very supportive of me and my dreams.

Hmoodle: Have you taken any lessons outside of High school?

Gao: When I started college, I also started to take hip hop workshops here in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was a great way for me to start picking up choreography from other dance teachers. That was when I really realized that I really enjoy dancing and would love to do it eventually for a career.

Hmoodle: What are some short term goals for your dancing career?

Gao: Last year, I joined my first professional dance team in Charlotte and now this year I am on my second pro team. I believe that I can only go up from here. With this dance team, I am trying to win a free ticket to go to Atlanta. There is a professional dance convention hosted every year in Atlanta, Georgia and my dream this year is to get to see their dance floor. I eventually want to audition for the Carolina Top Cats.

Hmoodle: How can our Hmoodle viewers go to support your team?

Gao: It would mean the world to me if everybody helped support my dreams by liking my dance page @
and follow me on social media.

Hmoodle: Who are some your favorite dance choreographers?

Gao: I have so many favorites! I look up to a lot of dancers but my main inspirations are Sorah Yang, Mina Myoung, Mike Song, Sori Na, and Kaelynn Harris.

Hmoodle: When your not competing or practicing, what other things do you enjoy?

Gao: I love hanging out with my family. Family is so important to me! I have a huge family of 15 members!!! With any free time, I love going home and spending time with them. We always cook and eat together. It’s always a great time with them.

Hmoodle: Something shocking about you?

Gao: Something shocking about me would be that I am currently a Chef! I graduated in 2013 with my Culinary Arts degree. I started off being a prep cook in the kitchen but eventually worked my way up to being a salary Chef. I love cooking and I enjoy working as a team in the kitchen. It’s a lot of hard work but I love working hard and I know that when I put my mind to something, I can accomplish anything.

Hmoodle: what would be the dream stage for you to perform on?

Gao: My dream stage to perform would be in the Carolina Panthers stadium. Because I am from the Carolinas, I represent my Panthers all the way. I am training really hard this year to be able to being a Top Cat dancer.

Hmoodle: Any last words?

Gao: Never let anybody tell you that you can’t do something. Put your mind to something, focus, and go after your dreams.

Hmoodle:  Best way for our Hmoodle viewers to follow you? (Social media, website, email etc.)
